Steps to Use the Power Factor Calculator

  1. Select the Power Type:
    • Locate the dropdown menu labeled “Power Type”.
    • Choose the appropriate power type from the options:
      • Single Phase
      • Three Phase (Line to Line Voltage)
      • Three Phase (Line to Neutral Voltage)
  2. Enter the Required Values:
    • Based on your selection, the relevant input fields will appear.
    • For Single Phase:
      • Enter the Voltage (V) in volts.
      • Enter the Current (I) in amperes.
      • Enter the Power (P) in watts.
    • For Three Phase (Line to Line Voltage):
      • Enter the Voltage (V) in volts.
      • Enter the Current (I) in amperes.
      • Enter the Power (P) in watts.
    • For Three Phase (Line to Neutral Voltage):
      • Enter the Voltage (V) in volts.
      • Enter the Current (I) in amperes.
      • Enter the Power (P) in watts.
  3. Calculate the Power Factor:
    • After entering the required values, click the “Calculate” button.
    • The calculator will compute the power factor based on the provided inputs and selected power type.
    • The result, including the calculation formula, will be displayed in a highlighted box below the form.
  4. Reset the Calculator:
    • To clear all input fields and results, click the “Reset” button.

Example Calculations

  • Single Phase Calculation:
    • If you have a voltage of 230V, a current of 10A, and a power of 2000W, the power factor (PF) is calculated as:
PF= 2000  =2000 =0.87
   230x10  2300

Three-Phase (Line to Line Voltage) Calculation:

  • If you have a voltage of 400V, a current of 5A, and a power of 3000W, the power factor (PF) is calculated as:
PF=   3000     =3000  =0.87
  400 x 5 x √3  3464.1

Three-Phase (Line to Neutral Voltage) Calculation:

  • If you have a voltage of 230V, a current of 10A, and a power of 6000W, the power factor (PF) is calculated as:
PF=   6000      =6000 =0.87
   230 x 10 x 3  6900

Formulas Used in the Power Factor Calculator

The Power Factor (PF) calculator computes the power factor using the formulas for different types of electrical systems: AC Single Phase, AC Three Phase (Line to Line Voltage), and AC Three Phase (Line to Neutral Voltage).

1. AC Single Phase

For an AC Single Phase system, the power factor is calculated using the formula:

PF =    P
      V X I

Where:

  • P is the real power in watts (W)
  • V is the voltage in volts (V)
  • I is the current in amperes (A)

2. AC Three Phase (Line to Line Voltage)

For an AC Three Phase system using line-to-line voltage, the power factor is calculated using the formula:

PF =      P
      V X I X √3

Where:

  • P is the real power in watts (W)
  • V is the line-to-line voltage in volts (V)
  • I is the current in amperes (A)
  • √3 is the square root of 3 (approximately 1.732)

3. AC Three Phase (Line to Neutral Voltage)

For an AC Three Phase system using line-to-neutral voltage, the power factor is calculated using the formula:

PF =      P
      V X I X 3

Where:

  • P is the real power in watts (W)
  • V is the line-to-neutral voltage in volts (V)
  • I is the current in amperes (A)
  • 3 is the number of phases
